Jaya allocates Rs 380 cr for upgradation of Nagapattinam port

Chennai: The Nagapattinam Port in Tamil Nadu would be upgraded as an all-weather, deep-water green field port at a cost of Rs 380 crore, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said today.

"In the first year of its operations after upgradation, the port can handle 10 lakh tonnes of cargo which will yield a revenue of Rs 20 crore," a state government release here said.      

The port would be developed on Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) mode and will have facilities for direct berthing and in its 25th year of operations, it can handle 60 lakh tonnes of cargo annually, paving the way for a revenue-generation of Rs 120 crore, it said.

Jayalalithaa made the allocation acknowledging the fact that ports play a vital part in a state's economic and industrial growth, the release said adding the development of the port will en sure employment in nearby areas besides benefiting industrial units located in the region.
