Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday said there was no need for a special session of the Assembly to discuss the Mullaperiyar row as the political parties in the TN were united on the issue. Jayalalithaa told reporters here, "At the moment I do not think it is necessary, because we are all united in our stand."
Asked on the tense situation on Tamil Nadu-Kerala border and if there was an increase in the deployment of police force, she said police forces of both the states have been along the border. "I have also requested the Union government to deploy CISF personnel at the dam site, you are aware of that."
The political parties in Tamil Nadu are united in their stance that the Mullaperiyar dam was absolutely safe and that the storage level should be raised to
142 ft in the reservoir as per a 2006 Supreme Court verdict. To deliberate the issue, PMK demanded a special session of the Assembly.
On November 23, Jayalalithaa urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to urge Kerala to honour the rights guaranteed to Tamil Nadu under the 1886 and 1970 agreements in letter and spirit. She also wanted him to persuade Kerala to abide by the Supreme Court (verdict of 27 February 2006) on the issue.
On Saturday, after reports of some violent incidents at the dam site, she urged the Prime Minister to deploy the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at the dam site to avert any damage to the structure.
