'99 Per Cent' No to BJP Alliance, Omar Abdullah Tells NDTV: Highlights

Srinagar: With the National Conference lagging behind the PDP and the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir assembly poll results, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah says he is not aspiring to the office of CM. In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Mr Abdullah says he is 99 per cent sure there will be no alliance between his party and the BJP.

Following are the highlights of his interview:

  • I am not aspiring to the office of chief minister
  • Happy to represent the people of Beerwah as MLA
  • On alliance with the BJP: 99 per cent no (jokes about one per cent for politics)
  • Not for me to decide (on government formation or support)
  • Appropriate for me to step back and see what others do
  • Have not received a call from Amit Shah yet
  • A couple of hours ago I was not sure I am going to be an MLA
  • This is not a government I would have liked to head. Whatever be the alliance the government won't really have more than 45 MLAs.
  • Would not like to be in Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's position
  • I gave Mufti Mohd Saeed everything on a platter. In spite of that we won only 28
  • 28 is an abysmal number
  • BJP is a victim of its own propaganda
  • NC is the only party that has pulled anything out of General Elections debris
  • As much as I am satisfied that NC has done better than anyone there are two people in whose shoes I don't want to be in. Mufti Mohd and Governor Vohra
  • It's a mess. No one party enjoys the confidence in the state
  • But NC and Congress have people from all three regions
  • At this point, onus is on BJP, PDP and Congress to figure something out
  • I am looking forward to meeting my parents
  • NC is not ruling anything in or out
  • Feel more of a victor today than I did in 2008.
  • Media gave me 10 seats in opinion poll. I won 17
  • I was even losing Beerwah. I was staring at possibility that I would have no work come tomorrow
  • Why should I make life easier for other parties
  • If I tell you what I will tell them when they call me, they won't call me
  • Could support PDP if Mufti Mohd picks up the phone
  • NC is a very significant player in what may happen in J&K in coming days
  • Not going to Mufti Mohd's house. Have not spoken to any party. But with 17 MLAs, no way NC won't be a significant player
  • Numbers hint towards BJP-PDP government. What parties do I don't know
  • We have had a very difficult democratic process since militancy broke out in the 90s
  • Other states have been experimenting with coalition
  • Maybe this fractured mandate will make people go out and vote for a majority next time
