Assam polls: 520 file papers for first phase

Guwahati: For the first phase of assembly polls in Assam on April 4 next, 520 candidates have filed their nominations papers for 62 constituencies where 11,254 polling stations would be set up with nine auxiliary ones, Chief Election Officer of the state has said.

"On the day of scrutiny today, however, the exact figure of nomination papers rejected is not clear yet as reports are still pouring in," Chief Election Officer of the state Hemanta Narzary told reporters.

In Barak Valley's Karimganj district scrutiny was postponed as there were complains by quite a few candidates but the process would be completed by tomorrow, Narzary said.

Of the 11254 polling stations, he said, 2093 were 'very sensitive', 2985 'sensitive' and over 6000 'comparatively safe'.

For the second phase polling on April 11 in rest of the 64 constituencies, the CEO said, there would be 12,559 polling stations and 30 auxiliary ones with 2033 described as 'highly sensitive', 4175 as 'sensitive' and over 6300 'comparatively safe'.

Auxiliary polling centres were set up with those polling stations where the voters exceeded 1400, he added.

For security during the elections, the CEO said, 100 companies of central paramilitary forces (CPMF) had arrived in the state with another 50 arriving by Sunday to be deployed across the state.

Another 100 companies of CPMF would also be arriving from West Bengal on March 25, Narzary said, adding, the state already had 96 companies that could be spared.

The CEO said that 65 - 70 per cent of the polling stations, including most of the critical ones, will be covered by the CPMF and the rest by police, micro-observers and video cameras.

"So we expect the polls to be smooth and peaceful. There should be no problems", he said.
