Bhopal: Narendra Modi's first tweet on Sunday congratulated Shivraj Singh Chouhan on his "wonderful performance in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Elections."
Mr Chouhan, who led his BJP to a third straight victory in Madhya Pradesh, returned the compliment as he predicted the party's victory in next year's national election "under Mr Modi's leadership."
Mr Chouhan will be chief minister for a third term running.
The BJP is leading in 147 of the state's 230 seats, well over the halfway mark at 115.
The Congress is leading in 71 seats and has as such failed to make a dent in the state. Faced with Mr Chouhan's indubitable popularity, the party had pinned its hopes on a record 72.52 voter turnout, applying conventional wisdom that more people vote when they want a change.
Madhya Pradesh clearly voted in big numbers to emphasize that it did not want a change.
The Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh and three other states - Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan - for which votes are being counted today, were seen as a semi-final to the general elections due by May.
They are also being considered a test of the popularity of Mr Modi, who is the BJP's prime ministerial candidate.
Mr Modi and Mr Chouhan, seen as rivals within the BJP for long, seemed to bury their differences and showered praise on each other in the run-up to the Madhya Pradesh elections.
Mr Modi has much to be pleased about. His party has posted big wins in MP and Rajasthan and looks set to form government in Delhi too.
