Kolkata:
An arrest warrant was issued on Thursday against Subhrangshu Roy, the Trinamool Congress' candidate from the Bijpur constituency in West Bengal.
The warrant follows an incident two days ago when he allegedly assaulted an Election Commission team that was visiting the area. The team was manhandled and their vehicle was damaged.
The police is conducting raids at several places to trace Roy.
"After investigation we have found that there is evidence against the accused and we will take action. The law of the land says we have to arrest the accused", said Rahul Shrivastav, SP, North 24 Parganas.
So far, 12 people have been arrested in this connection.
When told that Subhrangsu had been seen at different rallies and meetings even on Thursday, Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta said, "I have no idea about that but the district administration has informed me that they are doing everything to arrest him."
Meanwhile, the CPI-M demanded strict action by the Election Commission and exemplary punishment for Roy.
"The issue is whether the culprit has been arrested or not. The fact of the matter is that, till now he has not been arrested. It is shocking", said CPI(M) leader Rabin Deb.
Meanwhile, Subhrangshu's father Mukul Roy, who is a Union Minister and a senior party leader said, "Law will take its own course".
