Cong, NCP agree on seats for Mumbai

New Delhi: Last minute squabbling over specific seats could postpone the Congress and the NCP from formally announcing their tie up for the Maharashtra elections.

On Thursday night, after three rounds of talks in Mumbai, they achieved an important breakthrough when the Congress agreed to give the NCP seven seats in Mumbai, the same number it fought last time in 2004.

The two parties have over the past two days been meeting in Mumbai, with the Assembly seats in the city and in neighbouring Thane proving to be the point of contention.

But there was also a minor setback: the NCP says they have not accepted the formula of 114 seats to them, and 174 to the Congress. The NCP now says, they want one more seats.

The NCP wanted to fight seats here, like last time but the Congress insisted on lesser seats for the party.

Both sides met at the residence of NCP leader Chaggan Bhujbal in Mumbai.

The seat-sharing talks between senior Congress and NCP leaders for next month's Assembly polls in Maharashtra remained inconclusive on Wednesday night with both sides deciding to meet again on Thursday morning.
