Congress-DMK election talks yield no results

Chennai: Elections in Tamil Nadu are just a month away, and while the Congress and DMK have agreed that they'll fight the election together, they haven't still decided just how. An unhappy sign of the negotiations - Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Congressman in charge of Tamil Nadu,  skipped a scheduled meeting this morning with DMK chief Karunanidhi on seat-sharing (a third round of talks held last night was inconclusive).

The past few weeks have been tough on their relationship with the CBI's investigation into the 2G scam extending to some of the DMK's senior-most leaders including Mr Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi.

A Raja, the DMK leader who was Telecom Minister till November, is in jail.

In the last state election, the Congress was given 48 seats.  Now, it wants more. And while it currently supports the DMK government, if the alliance wins the election, the Congress wants to be included in the government.

Mr Azad refused to comment on whether the Congress' demand for a share in power in the state had become a sticking point between the two political partners, merely saying that the Congress team had had a "long discussion with Karunanidhi yesterday," and would brief the party leadership about it.

The DMK will hold an internal meeting on Saturday to discuss the Congress' needs, along with its election manifesto.
