Chennai:
After he voted today, one of the star candidates in the Tamil Nadu elections spoke to NDTV about why he thinks his party, the DMK, will return to power with a huge majority.
MK Alagiri, whose father is the state's Chief Minister, M Karunanidhi, said that the DMK and its partners will win "200 of the 234 seats" in Tamil Nadu.
Mr Alagiri's sibling rivalry with his brother, MK Stalin, has for a while been a political headline in the state. Mr Alagiri is reportedly concerned about whether his brother will succeed his father as the leader of the party in Tamil Nadu. Mr Alagiri has repeatedly said that he would like to play a greater role in Tamil Nadu politics, rather than the centre, where the DMK is a senior partner in the UPA coalition and where Mr Alagiri as a Union minister. "I have worked hard, Stalin has too," said Mr Alagiri.
He also dismissed reports that several opinion polls have declared that the Opposition in Tamil Nadu is likely to be voted into power. Jayalalithaa, who heads the AIADMK, is hoping to be the next Chief Minister. She has tied up with the Left and actor Vijaykanth's DMDK. Mr Alagiri doesn't think that's tough competition. "It's not a big challenge. Vijaykanth said he will have an alliance only with God. But now he has joined hands with the AIADMK. Nobody will trust that alliance," he said.
