Governments so far
New Delhi: The state of Maharashtra came into existence on May 1, 1960. Following are the details of the last five elections in the state.

12th assembly elections (2004): The Indian National Congress (INC), in alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), formed a coalition government in Maharashtra after 2004 elections. Vilasrao Deshmukh of the Congress party became the chief minister and R R Patil of the NCP deputy chief minister of the state. 

In the wake of criticism after the 26/11 terror strikes in Mumbai, Deshmukh stepped down and Ashok Chavan, the present chief minister of the state, took over on December 8, 2008. R R Patil also resigned on December 1, 2008 and Chhagan Bhujbal of the NCP replaced him as the deputy chief minister of the state.

11th assembly elections (1999): The Indian National Congress (INC), in alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), formed a coalition government in Maharashtra. Congress contested the state elections along with the Republican Party of India, while the NCP joined hands later to form the coalition Government.

Vilasrao Deshmukh became the chief minister, while Chhagan Bhujbal of the NCP became the deputy chief minister of the state. Deshmukh remained the chief minister from October 18, 1999 to January 16, 2003. Then Sushil Kumar Shinde took over on January 18, 2003 and continued as the chief minister of the state till October 30, 2004.

10th assembly elections (1995): Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance formed the government in Maharashtra with Manohar Joshi of Shiv Sena as the chief minister. Gopinath Munde of the BJP became the deputy chief minister of the state.

Manohar Joshi's tenure continued from March 14, 1995 to January 31, 1999. Then Narayan Rane took over on February 1, 1999 and continued till October 17, 1999.

9th assembly elections (1990): Indian National Congress (INC) formed the government in Maharashtra with Sudhakarrao Naik as the chief minister of the state. He took over on June 25, 1991 and continued till February 22, 1993. He was succeeded by Sharad Pawar, who was the chief minister of the state from March 6, 1993 to March 14, 1995.

8th assembly elections (1985): Indian National Congress (INC) formed the government with Shivajirao Nilangekar Patil as the chief minister of the state. His tenure lasted from June 3, 1985 to March 6, 1986. He was succeeded by Shankarrao Chavan, who became the chief minister of Maharashtra on March 12, 1986 and continued till June 26, 1988. Sharad Pawar succeeded Shankarrao Chavan, whose tenure lasted from June 26, 1988 to June 25, 1991.


Haryana became a state on November 1, 1966, on the recommendation of the Sardar Hukam Singh Parliamentary Committee. Earlier, it was part of Punjab. Following are the details of last five elections in the state.

Assembly elections 2005:  The Indian National Congress formed the government in Haryana in the last assembly elections held in 2005. Bhupinder Singh Hooda became the chief minister of the state. Hooda, the present chief minister of the state, took over on March 5, 2005.

Assembly elections 2000: The Indian National Lok Dal headed by Om Prakash Chautala formed the government in Haryana. Chautala was the chief minister of the state till March 4, 2005.

Assembly elections 1996: Haryana Vikas Party (HVP) formed the government in Haryana.  Bansi Lal became the chief minister, whose reign continued from May 11, 1996 to July 23, 1999.

Assembly elections 1991: Indian National Congress formed the government in the state. Bhajan Lal became the chief minister, whose tenure continued from July 23, 1991 to May 9, 1996.

Assembly elections 1987: Janata Dal formed the government in Haryana. Chaudhary Devi Lal became the 8th chief minister of the state, whose reign continued from July 17, 1987 to December 2, 1989.

Arunachal Pradesh became the 25th state of India on February 20, 1987. Statehood was conferred when Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister. Following are the details of last three elections fought in the state.
 
Assembly elections 2004:  Indian National Congress (INC) formed the government in Arunachal Pradesh after the 2004 elections. Gegong Apang became the chief minister of the state following his unanimous election as the leader of the 34-member Congress Legislature Party (CLP).

Dorjee Khandu is the present chief minister of the state. He took over as the fifth chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh on April 9, 2007, replacing Gegong Apang, after dissident ruling Congress MLAs elected him the new CLP leader.

Assembly elections 1999: Indian National Congress formed the government in the state after sweeping the polls in 1999. Congress secured 53 seats in the Arunachal assembly.  Apang's Arunachal Congress was decimated and he was the only candidate from the party to be elected to the assembly. Mukut Mithi became the chief minister of the state, whose reign continued from January 19, 1999 to August 3, 2003.

Assembly elections 1995: In the assembly elections held in 1995, the Indian National Congress (INC) secured an overwhelming majority by winning 54 seats and formed a government with Gegong Apang as Chief Minister.  However, Apang left the party following differences with Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao and formed the Arunachal Congress in September 1996 with the support of 54 MLAs.
