Ahmedabad: Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) leader and former chief minister Keshubhai Patel won from Visavadar constituency in Saurashtra region.
Mr Patel won by about 20,000 votes against his nearest Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rival Kanubhai Bhalala. The Congress did not field any candidate in this constituency.
83-year-old Patel was hoping to prevent Mr Modi from securing a third term as chief minister. Mr Modi has ruled Gujarat since he replaced Patel as chief minister in October 2001.
