Ahmedabad: Barely hours before voting began for the second phase of polling in central and north Gujarat, Vadodara Police trapped an ambulance attached to a private medical college carrying a consignment of liquor in the wee hours of Sunday.
Police claimed that the ambulance belonged to the medical college run by Congress candidate contesting from Waghodia constituency and the liquor consignment was meant for distribution in the locality.
Officials said that the liquor was being transported by Devanshu Patel, son of Jayesh Patel who is contesting on a Congress ticket.
The ambulance was first intercepted by the villagers sensing that some clandestine activity was going on. Later, a police team which rushed to the spot took the ambulance in its possession.
Devanshu fled away from the spot and is absconding. The police have filed an FIR against him and are investigating whether the distribution was taking place at the behest of his father.
