Haryana: Hooda stakes claim with 7 independents

Haryana: Hooda stakes claim with 7 independents
New Delhi: A day after disappointing results in Haryana, the Congress finally managed to scrape through. All seven Independents have now pledged their support to the Congress. In fact, on Friday evening they met the Governor accompanied by the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee chief Phool Chand Mullana not Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

"The Independents have given us unconditional support," said Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Chief Minister Bhupindra Singh Hooda on Friday met with the state Governor in Chandigarh. The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) which met in Chandigarh, authorised Sonia Gandhi to choose the leader.

Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who had apparently expected to sail throughafter a Congress sweep in the Lok Sabha elections just six months ago,is now battling the disadvantage of an unconvincing mandate.

Hooda, however, is still the frontrunner, as the Congress will find it difficult to distance itself from a Jat leader right now.

The Congress has 40 MLAs and along with the 7 Independents the tallygoes up to 47. But in the 90-member House that's a razor-thin majority. (Assembly elections: Detailed Results)

Haryana: Where Congress stands
  • House strength: 90
  • Half-way mark: 45
  • Congress+ Independents: 47
To be in a comfortable position, the Congress needs the support of Bhajan Lal's son Kuldeep Bishnoi, a former Congress rebel, whose party has 6 MLAs who's now saying he wants to be part of the government.

"We have finalised that we will be supporting one of the parties to form the government because people have put faith in our party," said Kuldeep Bishnoi, Leader, Haryana Janhit Congress.

But now that the Congress has the support of Independents, it's in a stronger position to negotiate with Bishnoi who's said to be opposed to Hooda's leadership and may even want key Cabinet posts in lieu of support. With advantage Congress now, what will Bishnoi do?

And amid all the drama, INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala who may now have to sit in the Opposition, is accusing the Congress of horse trading.

"The people gave a mandate against the Congress. The Congress party is simply involved in horse-trading. Now the right thing to do is stop this horse-trading. It has become apparent, how the MLA's have been bought and kidnapped," said OP Chautala, Leader, INLD.

Twenty four hours after the results there was hectic parley in politics of Haryana, finally Congress has managed to come through, although it hasn't been convincing this perhaps is the reason why Chautala is still not giving up.
