Bhopal:
25 per cent of the 213 MLAs in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly are facing criminal charges, ranging from theft to murder, according to a report by the state unit of a civil society group, National Election Watch. The report is based on the affidavits filed by the candidates during the 2008 polls.
Over 11 per cent of these 'tainted' MLAs have been accused of serious offenses.
28 legislators from the BJP, including senior ministers in the Madhya Pradesh government like Kailash Vijayvarghiya, Babulal Gaur, Ajay Vishnoi, Uma Shankar Gupta and Vijay Shah have criminal cases registered against them.
"In politics, I feel morality comes before legality. We cannot have always legality as an issue. We must see legal grounds and then take a decision," the party's spokesperson, Dr Hitesh Vajpayee, said.
21 of the Congress MLAs in the state face criminal charges. The party's No. 2 Rahul Gandhi's public outburst led the Centre to withdraw an ordinance that shielded convicted lawmakers from disqualification.
"See a person being accused in a case is different; it depends on the nature of the case. And if he is proven guilty then that person will not be given ticket, says Congress spokesperson Manak Agarwal.
Madhya Pradesh votes for its next government on November 25.
