Maharashtra: Congress 'heirs' get tickets

Mumbai: After withholding their names for two days, Congress has finally given tickets to Vilasrao Deshmukh's son Amit Deshmukh, and Sushil Kumar Shinde's daughter Praniti for the Maharashtra Assembly elections.

And on Friday Amit filed his nomination from his father's stronghold Latur; Praniti did the same from Solapur, where her father is the MP.

The deluge of demands for tickets from political heavyweights for their children had forced the Congress to postpone its list of candidates. But after it gave a ticket to President Pratibha Patil's son Rajenfra Shekhawat, it was clear it would not block the heir parade.

But unlike Shekhawat, both these first timers should be easy winners.

Amit, who was in the youth Congress and a behind-the-scene player when his father was the chief minister, was being groomed for the Latur seat for several years. And though Praniti is a political novice, she is unlikely to face serious opposition in Solapur.

Yet this time, the scrutiny on political heirs meant the Congress trimmed its list and left many out, including children of state Congress chief Manikrao Thakre, city Congress chief Kripashankar Singh and Cabinet minister Narayan Rane.
