Maharashtra polls: Kambli joins the fray

Mumbai: From cricket to reality shows and now public service, former cricketer Vinod Kambli joins a long list of stars who have joined politics. Kambli will contest from the Vikhroli assembly constituency in Mumbai on a Lok Bharti party ticket.

At the Third Front's launch rally at Mumbai's Shivaji Park, Kambli announced his plans to contest elections from Vikhroli through the Lokbharti party, which is part of the 16-party Third Front.

Though his friendship with Sachin Tendulkar recently became the subject of controversy, he did not fail to mention him.

"Sachin Tendulkar is currently in Colombo. My best wishes are always with him, but hope he does come and support me," he said.

Third Front will fight the Maharashtra elections together, and plan to contest all 288 seats. Its allies include the Left, the Samajwadi party, and the Republican Party of India.

Actor Sanjay Dutt and Vinod Kambli were the star attractions of the rally organised by the Third Front. "I hope people come out and vote for us. I request people to come and vote for us," Dutt said.

If it remains united, the Third front will cut into the secular vote and pose a serious challenge to the Congress-NCP alliance in this election.
