Mamata Banerjee to take charge as West Bengal Chief Minister today
Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee will be sworn in as the first woman chief minister of West Bengal today, marking a change of guard that will see the end of 34 years of uninterrupted rule by CPI(M)-led Left Front.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place in the presence of 3200 invitees - Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister AK Antony will be among the Central leaders present at the ceremony.

The guest list also includes former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Mamata had sent a personal invitation to him yesterday.

Buddhadeb-led CPM ruled for 34 continuous years in West Bengal. But the party faced a rout at the hands of Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress in Assembly polls. Nearly all its ministers, including former CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, lost the elections.

PTI adds: The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Raj Bhavan lawns at 1:01 pm, a time chosen by the Trinamool Congress chief, in the presence of Governor MK Narayanan.

Congress, which had fought the Assembly polls in alliance with the Trinamool Congress, has also decided to join the government.

"We are going to join the government. We have conveyed this to the honorable Chief Minister. You will get to know who from Congress will be joining the government," AICC observer in-charge of West Bengal, Shakeel Ahmed, said after a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting. He added that the names of the Congress ministers had been communicated to Banerjee but did not disclose them to the media.

In the Mamata Banerjee-led alliance government, her party Trinamool Congress will have 36 ministers. The number of Congress ministers has not been disclosed yet.  (With PTI Inputs)
