Modi Wave a Tsunami That Can Crush All Competition: Amit Shah
BJP president Amit Shah speaking on the Maharashtra, Haryana poll results
New Delhi: BJP Chief Amit Shah today said his party's victory in Maharashtra and Haryana proved "beyond doubt that people in India consider Prime Minister Narendra Modi their undisputed leader."

The BJP has wrested Haryana from the Congress and won the most number of seats in Maharashtra.

"...For those who thought the Modi wave is over, this is proof that it's still a tsunami that can crush all competition," said Mr Shah, who has been credited with crafting a winning strategy for the BJP in the May national election as well as these polls.

PM Modi had campaigned aggressively in Maharashtra and Haryana, with the BJP contesting alone in these states for the first time.

Mr Shah said the BJP would form government in both states.

In Haryana, the BJP has crossed the half-way mark but in Maharashtra the party is expected to fall far short of a majority. Its former ally, the Shiv Sena, is set to finish a distant number two. Former partners, Congress and NCP are battling for third place.

The BJP dumped the Sena, its 25-year ally, before the polls but can't form government without help. As both parties hinted at a reunion, the NCP has complicated matters by offering unconditional support to the BJP. NCP's Praful Patel said, "Only the BJP has got more seats. Maharashtra needs a stable government with a link to the Centre. We have decided to support the BJP from outside."

The BJP president was noncommittal on the offer though his party's leaders in Maharashtra have publicly opposed any tie-up with the NCP, which co-governed the state for 15 years with the Congress.

Refusing to respond to questions on whether his party was debating an alliance with the NCP, Mr Shah said, "You only saw half of what Mr Patel said. He said the verdict is for the BJP and so we offer unconditional support. NCP has offered to extend outside support - an alliance would mean being in the government."

On the Shiv Sena, he said, "We never tried to break the alliance, nor were we responsible for the break-up."

Mr Shah said with today's victories, the BJP had taken a step forward in giving people a Congress-free India.
