Pawar eager to hold on to alliance with Cong

Mumbai: NCP chief Sharad Pawar has said he wants an alliance with the Congress in Maharashtra for the Assembly elections next month.

The Congress and NCP rule the state together, but the alliance has run into rough weather over the issue of seat-sharing. Pawar said on Tuesday that the NCP had asked the Congress for the same seat sharing arrangement as the last time.

There are just nine days to go for the filing of nominations for the Maharashtra Assembly elections, but the contours of the Congress and NCP alliance are still not in place.

After its success in the Lok Sabha elections, in which it won 18 seats in the state, the Congress wants an increased share of seats to contest.

There are also reports that some leaders within the Congress feel that it may well be able to replicate the Uttar Pradesh victory in Maharashtra by going it alone.

Speaking to Prannoy Roy on Monday, the NCP's Praful Patel admitted that if the parties decided to fight separately, it could end up benefitting the BJP.

The Congress will meet internally in the Capital this weekend to finalise seats. Elections to all 288 seats in Maharashtra will be held on October 13, the eve of Diwali. Counting will be held on October 22.
