New Delhi:
The Election Commission is changing the date for the first phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, which is scheduled to take place on February 4, 2012.
Sources say the decision is being taken because of the uncertainty over the date of the Muslims' 'Barawafat' festival which may also fall on February 4. The revised schedule for the 60 assembly constituencies will be announced by the commission separately.
The commission has also requested the Governor of Uttar Pradesh not to issue the notification for the first phase scheduled on January 10, 2012.
According to the earlier announcement, the Uttar Pradesh elections was scheduled for seven phases between February 4 and 28.
