Puducherry minister announces retirement from active politics

Puducherry: A Congress minister in Puducherry today said he would not contest the April 13 assembly polls and has also decided to retire from active politics.

Malladi Krishna Rao who represents the lone segment of Yanam, an enclave of Puducherry in Andhra Pradesh, said he had written to All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader Sonia Gandhi on January 28 about not contesting the polls and withdrawing from politics. He had also informed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of his decision.

"I will, however, continue to be a Congress member and will not switch my loyalty to any other party," he said.

Rao said he had not submitted the application to the Puducherry Congress Committee (PCC) leader to seek party ticket to contest the polls in Yanam.

Rao, who was first elected to the territorial assembly from Yanam as an Independent in 1996, has been holding the seat since then.
