The Finger Pressing EVM is Stronger Than The One on AK-47, Says PM Modi in Jammu

Jammu: The finger which presses the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) button is much stronger than the one that operates an AK-47, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at an election rally in Jammu's Samba district on Monday.

"Even you have the power, the power to press a finger (on the EVM), and the strength of your finger is much more than one on an AK-47," the Prime Minister said.

Jammu and Kashmir, which was hit by four terror attacks on Friday, will be going for the third of the five-phase assembly elections on Tuesday.

The army says the high turnout in the first two phases - 71% and above - has triggered the attacks.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has blamed the media hype over the turnout for the attacks. In an interview to NDTV, he said the celebrations were "premature", "should have waited for all phases to be complete. It was like going into a tiger's cage and pulling its tail."

Today, at the Samba rally, the Prime Minister underscored the development mantra.

"There is only one mantra - vikaas (development) - which will provide the youth with employment opportunities," he said.

"I have come today to appeal to you to have a majority government in Jammu and Kashmir, a BJP government. We all are one and we have to take a new politics of development ahead," he said.

The Prime Minister is on a day's visit to the state. He is expected to address a rally shortly at Srinagar's Sher-e-Kashmir stadium. It would be the BJP's first rally in the Muslim majority Kashmir valley.
