Bharat NCAP is focused on improving safety of vehicles for Indian roads
India's vehicle safety assessment program, Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Program), launched on October 1, 2023, by Union Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari, aims to improve safety standards of vehicles sold in India by providing a safety rating system for vehicles sold in India. As per reports a major upgrade for the program is on the way in the form of Bharat NCAP 2.0. It is set to commence in October 2027, incorporating Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) into its evaluation procedures, significantly enhancing road safety standards.

Modeled after international NCAP programs, Bharat NCAP evaluates vehicle crashworthiness and occupant protection. Since its inception, it has assessed over 14 cars, including electric and internal combustion engine models. The 2.0 upgrade will focus on implementing active safety systems, such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), lane warning systems, adaptive cruise control, and driver monitoring systems.

To support this, ARAI is developing a new mobility research center in Takawe, Pune, featuring an ADAS smart city test track and a hydrogen test facility among others. The high energy impact test (HEIT) facility will be the first of its kind in India/Asia.

India's unique road conditions present challenges, including heavy traffic and inconsistent driving patterns. Incorporating ADAS into Bharat NCAP will ensure these systems are effective in Indian conditions. The 2.0 program aims to encourage manufacturers to prioritize safety and reduce human error, which accounts for over 80% of traffic accidents.

In 2023, India recorded its highest annual road accident deaths at 1.72 lakh, with 4.8 lakh accidents. The implementation of Bharat NCAP 2.0 positions India alongside nations prioritizing active safety technologies to minimize accidents and fatalities. Manufacturers like Honda, Tata Motors, and Mahindra are already integrating ADAS features, marking progress in automotive safety in the country, which is broken up into several different ADAS features with specific capabilities, also known as "safety and assistance features".
