The Delhi government has announced highlights of a new proposed electric vehicle policy for the national capital. The new Delhi EV Policy aims to address the growing issues with the air quality by ensuring that the EVs account for 27 percent of total vehicle registrations by 2027. This ambitious policy increases the previous target of 25 percent EV adoption. Furthermore, it also aims to systematically replace CNG vehicles like auto rickshaws, taxis, and LCVs with EVs.
The proposed policy for electric vehicles is expected to take effect in April 2025. All of this will contribute to fast-track EV adoption in the capital of India. Furthermore, it will replace the 2020 EV Policy, which targeted 25 percent EV adoption by 2024. It is to be noted that the earlier policy was supported by tax waivers, subsidies, and campaigns. Following the same pattern, the new policy proposes purchase incentives for electric two and three wheelers, commercial vehicles like electric trucks, and more.

A dedicated fund for electric vehicles (EVs) will be created to support incentives, funded through green taxes, pollution charges, and fees from aggregator licenses. The policy prioritizes the electrification of fleets for commercial transportation and implements stricter regulations to ensure compliance.
To bolster infrastructure, the government plans to install more public charging points and mandate charging stations in new buildings and public spaces. According to the statement, capital subsidies will be provided for private and semi-public charging stations, and fast-charging corridors will be developed along major roads.
To ensure the effective implementation of the policy, a Delhi Clean Mobility Centre (DCMC) will be set up to track progress and facilitate the city's shift towards a fully electric transportation system.
