The Delhi government has decided that the 15-year-old vehicles in the national capital will not get petrol at the fuel pumps. The announcement came from Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. This decision is aimed at reducing pollution in the national capital region, which has been struggling with the deterioration of air quality. Furthermore, the decision will impact thousands of car owners in the capital city. Here's all you need to know about the decision.

Impact On Owners

The people living in the Delhi NCR region who own vehicles that are 15 years of age will be most impacted by the decision. Furthermore, it remains to be seen if there will be additional policies to encourage the scrappage of such vehicles. To be specific, the owners of models like the Hyundai Accent, old Honda Civic, Maruti 800, and others will be most impacted by the decision. However, it remains to be seen how the government prevents the owners from refuelling their cars outside of city limits.

Enforcement

To enforce the policy, the government aims to utilize AI-enabled cameras at fuel stations to identify vehicles that are not compliant. These cameras, which are presently employed to verify Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, may also be enhanced to check the age of vehicles. In the coming months, fuel stations that do not have this technology are expected to install it.

With more than 1,00,000 end-of-life vehicles currently in Delhi, owners will need to make a choice to either dispose of their old vehicles, sell them outside the city with a No-Objection Certificate (NOC), or shift to alternative transportation methods. This might increase the use of electric or hybrid vehicles.
