It is in the air - Maruti Suzuki is developing a hybrid powertrain for its smaller cars. Lately, the company has been testing its hybrid technology for smaller cars in the Indian market. The test mules of these models under evaluation have been spotted on multiple occasions. While there were not many updates on the subject in the recent past, we have come across a substantial change that hints at a "hybrid future".

Specifically, the Japanese brand, Suzuki, has launched the fourth-gen Dzire in the Philippines. This model was introduced in India in November last year. However, in the Southeast Asian country, it has received a hybrid version of the compact sedan.

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire in the Philippines comes with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, Z-series petrol engine. This is the same unit that the India-spec version of the car gets as a replacement of the K-series engine that was available on the previous generation. However, in the Philippines, the power unit is supported by a 12V mild hybrid system. Furthermore, the transmission options include a CVT automatic.

The hybrid system consists of a 0.072 kWh battery, which transfers charge to a 2.19 kW (2 hp) electric motor. This system is aimed at improving the fuel efficiency (numbers yet to be revealed) of the vehicle while simultaneously assisting with torque and enabling energy recuperation. This brings no change in the overall power output but improves the driving dynamics. Specifically, it puts out 81 hp of power and 111 Nm of peak torque.

Apart from the aforementioned changes in the powertrain, the rest of the details, including the interior, exterior, and the feature list, are the same as the India-spec version. Hence, we can expect the brand to launch the updated version of the sedan in the country in the future.
