Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), one of India's biggest car manufacturers, has appointed Sunil Kakkar as an Additional Director and Whole-time Director, designated as Director (Corporate Planning). The change in the role takes effect on April 1, 2025, with his tenure concluding after three years on March 31, 2028. The decision to appoint Kakkar as the Director of Corporate Planning was agreed upon by the company's board of directors during a meeting held on March 26, 2025. This comes as part of MSIL's effort to bolster the leadership team and prepare for future growth.

In a submission to the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and BSE Limited, MSIL detailed the specifics of the appointment, complying with the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015. The company also announced a change in designation, with Kenichiro Toyofuku moving from Director (Corporate Planning) to Director (Sustainability), effective on the same date.

Sunil Kakkar joins his new position with more than 35 years of experience at Maruti Suzuki, having previously held the role of Senior Executive Officer and led the Corporate Planning division. A vital part of the company's Executive Committee, Kakkar has been crucial in defining MSIL's strategic direction, pursuing ambitious objectives, and leading restructuring efforts to improve organizational responsiveness. His appointment reflects MSIL's commitment to enhancing its corporate planning as it adapts to a changing automotive environment.

An engineering graduate from the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, Kakkar also possesses an MBA from the Asian Institute of Technology, where he received a gold medal for his academic achievements. His tenure at MSIL has seen him take on leadership roles across essential functions, including heading the Supply Chain division and serving as Plant Head for the Gurgaon production site.

Kakkar has been instrumental in setting up supply chains for key projects, accomplishing significant localization, and establishing joint ventures with international companies from Japan, Italy, and France. These partnerships have introduced advanced technologies—such as Controllers, AMT (Automated Manual Transmission), plastic fuel tanks, and high-strength sheet metal—into MSIL's operations.
