Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a full-size body-on-frame luxury off-road SUV, has been at the zenith of its segment for a long time. This status speaks of a lot of good things about the German vehicle. However, it also meant that it was out of reach for a lot of consumers. Addressing the issue, the decision makers at the head office of the three-pointed star decided to bring a smaller version of the SUV.

Things started with rumours of a vehicle called the "Baby G". Then came 2023, when the Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-Benz, Ola Kallenius, silenced the whispers, confirming that the vehicle is in the works and will be introduced in the market in a few years, and is called the "Little G".

The word on the street is, the Little G might be based on the MMA platform of the brand, using the same powertrain options as the third-gen CLA. If this turns out to be the case, the SUV will have similarities with its elder siblings not only in terms of appearance but also underpinnings, bringing decades of evolution associated with the name in a smaller package.

The idea of the "Little G" might turn out to be a big money making affair for the brand. This is because, even though the German SUV's popularity is through the roof, it lacks the range that comes with models like the Ford Bronco or the Jeep Wrangler.

Well, if it comes to making money while expanding a name deeply-rooted in the brand's history, the rivals don't want to be left behind. Land Rover, which already has a long list when it comes to offering options, has recently started testing a small SUV, which is being addressed as a "baby" SUV.

The recently surfaced spy shots of the upcoming "baby" Land Rover revealed quite a few details of the design, giving the enthusiasts a lot to think about. After analysing the photographs, it is easy to notice that the new vehicle has a boxy design, which makes it a probable member of the Defender family. Some believe that this is an electric SUV which will be based on the Jaguar Land Rover's Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) platform.

If the speculations turn out to be true, the "baby" Defender might be a rival to the Mercedes-Benz "baby" or "Little" G-Class. Chances are they might even enter the market at the same time. However, as of now, the details are scarce.
