Bengaluru: The open drains of Bengaluru have incited public protests, notably, installations of a crocodile and an anaconda placed on the streets to flag the attention of officials.

Days ago, a man used one of those uncovered manholes, over-flowing with sewage, to drown the three young children of the woman he was allegedly in love with.

Fayum Baig, in his mid-20s, has been arrested for drowning the two little boys and their sister on August 27 in a drain in East Bengaluru.

Their mother, identified as Nazima Begum, who is estranged from her husband, had reported them missing late in August.

The police says the suspect, Mr Baig, was convinced that Nazima Begum was having an affair with someone else. Because he is related to her and was recognized by her children, they agreed to leave with him when he showed up at their school.

The gruesome rendition of an apparently unrequited love comes just hours after Bengaluru discovered that a techie named MG Gokul allegedly killed his wife, using an idol of Lord Ganesha to strike her head.

Mr Gokul, in his 30s, was first interrogated by the police after it traced to him a series of WhatsApp messages and phone-calls that warned of bombs on flights departing Bengaluru on Saturday. Mr Gokul then allegedly confessed that he is in love with a former classmate, and used phones registered in her husband's name, hoping that the man would be arrested and removed from the picture. Mr Gokul reportedly said he had murdered his own wife late in June.
