48 hours later, ATM attacker still not found; Bangalore scared and angry

Bangalore: Despite being filmed by security cameras as he attacked a woman with a machete at an ATM in Bangalore two days ago, the man has not been identified. Eight police teams are hunting for him as the city grapples with anger and fear.

44-year-old Jyothi Uday is in hospital. Her skull was fractured, most of her nose chopped off, and the right side of her body is paralysed. Doctors say a plastic surgery to rebuild her nose was successful and that is recovering well. Ms Uday may record her statement with the police later in the day.

Corporation Bank, where Ms Uday works as a manager, has said in a statement that it is cooperating with the police and all medical help has been extended to the victim. The bank has also said that it is ensuring all security measures are taken at its ATMs across the state.

There was no security guard at the ATM booth that Ms Uday visited at around 7:10 am on Tuesday morning. A man entered the booth soon after, and pulled down the shutters. When she refused to hand over her money up him, he struck her repeatedly for around five minutes, then left her bleeding. (CCTV footage of the attack)

For three hours on one of Bangalore's busiest roads, she lay undiscovered, the shutters of the booth pulled down.

Finally, some schoolboys noticed blood trickling onto the road and informed the traffic police.

"She recognised me and spoke my name... Doctors have advised her not to speak too much," said her husband Uday Kumar.

Home Minister KJ George said yesterday that all ATM machines have to be manned by a security guard around the clock.
