New Delhi: An additional 700 riot control police personnel have been deployed in Karnataka to help the state government tackle protests over Cauvery river water sharing.

Karnataka was relatively peaceful today, a day after angry protestors targeted businesses with links to Tamil Nadu.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah warned of "stringent" action against vandalism or attempts to disturb peace today in a televised address.

Yesterday, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had spoken Karnataka and Tamil Nadu's chief ministers, assuring them of all help in handling the law and order situation in their states.

Protests over Karnataka being asked to share Cauvery river waters with Tamil Nadu escalated sharply yesterday after a Supreme Court ruling which meant that Karnataka had to yield more water than it was originally asked to last week.
