Bangalore: Biocon Academy launched
Bangalore: Bangalore-based Biocon, headed by Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, has announced the launch of the Biocon Academy in partnership with the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences.

The Academy aims to connect academia and industry by offering a 16 week certificate programme to make biotech graduates more employable. Biocon is offering a 75 per cent scholarship to deserving students.

India's biotech industry is currently valued at around 11 billion dollars and 40 000 biotech students graduate each year.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson and Managing Director of Biocon, said, "Right now we are facing a huge skill deficit. Right now, I know that of the 40,000 biotech graduates that are entering the job market every year, only 2000 can find employment, within the industry. And I believe that we need to do something about this very large talent population and make them industry ready, industry worthy. So it is really about proficiency about really focusing on how to make our graduates more proficient for industry employability."

The Academy will be located in Bangalore and the first batch will commence in January 2014.
