Bangalore:
Love for gardening cost a constable his life at Madivala on Monday. Sreekanta S, 49, sustained fatal injuries after he had fallen off a tree which he had climbed to prune its branches, so that a coconut sapling would get adequate sunlight.
The constable, attached to the 4th Battalion of the Karnataka State Reserve Police Force, climbed the tree in front of inspector Kushalappa's house in 5th Block of the KSRP quarters around 6.45 am. He had climbed about 10 metres, and even cut down a branch.
Sreekanta, a native of Assam, however, slipped from the tree and as he fell, his head hit a sharp rock on the ground. He was rushed to the St John's Hospital, where he breathed his last around 1.30 pm.
The police said Sreekanta loved and respected Kushalappa. He used to help the inspector in gardening.
Sreekanta had several times sought Kushalappa's permission to prune the branches of the tree, so that the coconut palm would grow straight. The inspector never gave his permission since he thought it would be dangerous.
The constable, however, strongly felt that the tree should be pruned. On Monday, when the inspector went for his morning walk, Sreekanta climbed the tree, and fell to his death.
