Bangalore man blackmails senior, demands Rs 50,000

Bangalore: An officer in the legal department of Doordarshan has filed a complaint against a class IV employee for trying to blackmail him, alleging misuse of his official position and demanding a ransom for his silence.

Though the incident happened two years ago, Shiva Kumar J, waited for his senior's consent for a go ahead and filed a criminal case against B Ashoka, who is a helper with All India Radio (AIR).

Shivakumar who was in his office on August 8, 2008 received a phone call from Ashoka. In his complaint, Shiva Kumar said that Ashoka made baseless allegations, accusing him of misusing his position and official vehicles.

"He said that he would file an RTI to seek details not only about me but also my seniors. Ashok told me that he could also file a false complaint against me and demanded Rs 50,000 for his silence," Shivakumar said.

Shivakumar brought this to the notice of his seniors, and a week later, the Doordarshan office received an RTI application seeking his details. The Bangalore office sought a legal opinion from the head office regarding providing the information, where the central standing committee opined that this is clear case of extortion and blackmail.

The officials held an internal enquiry and recently concluded that Ashok was trying to blackmail Shiva-kumar with intent to extortion. The officials suspended Ashok and asked Shivakumar to file a case against him.

The JC Nagar police have taken up the case of extortion and blackmailing and are investigating. "We are tracking down Ashoka since he has not been coming to office for the past few days," said an official.

Excerpts from the conversation:

Shiva Kumar:  Hello
Ashoka: Is this Shiva Kumar?
Shiva Kumar: Yes
Ashok: You are misusing your position and also your vehicle privileges.
Shiva Kumar: Then why don't you file a complaint?
Ashoka: You pay me Rs 50,000.  If not, I would bring this to the notice of your seniors and apply an RTI, seeking your and your DG and CEO's details to expose you all.
