Bangalore schools hang houseful boards

Bangalore: Schools affiliated to the state board are now following the footsteps of CBSE and ICSE institutions by admitting students for the next year, even before the completion of the current year.

Some of the schools in the city, affiliated to the state board have already finished the admission process for pre-primary and primary classes for the academic year 2011-12, while some are issuing applications. But as per the rule of the state department of public instructions, it is a clear violation of admission rules.

A few days ago, department officials told DNA that they will disaffiliate the schools which violate admission rules. Now it is the department's turn to act as per the rule, because most of the prime schools in the city, including Himanshu Jyothi Kala Peetha, Sri Vidya Mandir and Poorna Pragna Education Society have completed the admission process for next year.

The issue came to light after a complaint from a parent. When this newspaper did a reality check by visiting some top schools, it was shocked to see that many of them had displayed 'applications sold out and seats full' boards.

When contacted, authorities of Himanshu Jyothi Kala Peetha, Malleshwaram said, "Currently no applications are available for both LKG and class 1. We have completed the process in November itself."

According to officials, schools are not allowed to begin admission process till the department releases its academic calendar. However, for the next academic year, the department has not yet released the calendar. Last year's calendar insisted that schools undertake admission procedures only between May 28 and June 28.

Meanwhile, Sri Vidya Mandir in Malleswaram completed the interview process and finalised the eligible students list. Authorities at the school said, "The interview sessions are over, admission will start soon."

"There is no vacancy for pre-primary classes. If you want seats for class 1, you can try in March," they said.

At some of the top schools in the city, parents waited in the lounge to meet principals/managements. "We need to put a board outside saying 'admission full'; parents will keep pouring in, otherwise," said an agitated staff member at Himanshu Jyothi Kala Peetha.
