Bangalore:
Persistent problems posed by hostels run by Bangalore University may soon end. The varsity has decided to hand over the hostels to the department of social welfare. A university syndicate meeting held on Friday discussed the hostels' issue for a long while, before arriving at the decision.
Sources said, "We could not take strikes and protests by hostel inmates against the warden or the university from anymore. So we decided to hand them over to the government."
However, the university will admit students to the hostels and will also not stop its contribution of `400 for the maintenance of each student.
The social welfare department will run the hostels. The varsity will withdraw its wardens and social welfare department staff will replace them.
For over four months now, the university hostels have been in a state of siege as a series of protests against reforms taken up by the newly-appointed warden rocked the institutions.
