Bangalore woman feeds poison to child, ends life

Bangalore: Husband's illness coupled with mounting debt forced a young housewife to commit suicide after feeding poison to her baby at Weavers' Colony in Bangalore.

Padma, 22, and her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Bhoomika were rushed to a hospital but they died before reaching there on Monday night.

Police said Padma's husband Mohan Raj was diagnosed with cancer 15 days ago. He had also availed loans from several persons.

Raj has been driving an autorickshaw to supplement his income from a CD shop in Brindavan Nagar. Padma was an assistant in a computer shop. The couple married four years ago.

Police said Padma was depressed after she came to know about Raj's illness. The man and wife had had a talk over their family's future on Monday at Victoria Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment.

Later, Raj suspected that his wife would take the extreme step and tried to contact her over the phone around 10:30 pm. When she did not receive the call, he informed his relatives, who rushed to the couple's house and found the mother and child lying unconscious.

The bodies were handed over to the family after post-mortem examination.
