Bangalore: Bangalore is about to get a road that comes with a guarantee of no potholes. The road will open for commuters on Friday, but its target audience is VVIPs - it lies in the central part of the city and leads to the entrance of the state legislature that's used by senior ministers.
Over the last two months, the city's municipal corporation received 50,000 complaints about pothole from residents in different parts of the city.
The stretch on which it has lavished attention and Rs 25 lakhs was laid down in just three days - a layer, seven inches thick, that uses imported technology. Officials are confident it will need no maintenance for three decades. They say that the cement used is far stronger and better than the kind used even for bridges or new skyscrapers.
The cost is 25% more than what would be spent on a normal tar road.
"We began this on a pilot project... the road cannot get cut. Other roads like you see normally are classified as flexible pavements which need repair and maintenance every 3 to 5 years," said Mr M Somashekhar, Chief Engineer of the municipal corporation.
"I am approving the project as a common man. We need quality roads. But what is the guarantee the money is not eaten away in between by certain people?" asks Siddartha, an IT employee in the city.
