Bengaluru: The Marthoma Church in Bengaluru stands out for its green approach as it integrates the celebration of Christmas and recycling. While the Church, in the past, has put together Christmas trees made of cloth and plastic bottles, this year the 25-feet tall has been built using cardboard boxes.
"We've collected cardboard boxes from members of the Church and the market," said Church member Daniel Thomas.
"We are also using potato and onion sacks that we've coloured and made it into the Christmas wreaths," he further informed. "It is so easy to throw things away but the idea is at least to hold on to it, use it one more time."
Reverend Dr Shyam P Thomas of the Marthoma Church said there is a message of giving value to everyone and everything in the choice of material.
"Carton boxes - as you know - contains, conveys, conserves. Can we contain the values of love, the attitude of conciliarity, the norms of equality and the right of everybody to exist in this world, not only human beings but also the creation and other species as well? Moreover, this is to say that each one, everything has a place. Nothing is insignificant," he said.
