Bride-to-be nurse injects poison to commit suicide

Bangalore: A 29-year-old nurse committed suicide by injecting poison at her house in Mathikere late on Tuesday.

The nurse, B Nagarathnamma, who had been working with the MS Ramaiah Medical College, was to get married on December 16. Though the motive of the suicide was not known, the police were suspecting that resentment to the marriage might be the reason.

Nagarathnamma's relatives and colleagues, however, said she had been looking forward to the wedding arranged by her parents with the woman's consent. She had applied for leave from December 13.

The deceased had been staying at a rented accommodation near Eshwara Temple along with her sister B Sudha, also a nurse, and brother B Nagaraj, a pharmacist. The siblings hailed from Devara Malige village near Hiriyur in Chithradurga district, the police said.

The incident came to light when Sudha, employed at the Global Healthcare Hospital on KH Road, tried to wake Nagarathnamma up around 9 am on Wednesday, and found her dead.

The police said they were informed of the incident by Nagaraj. A syringe was found under Nagarathnamma's bed, and a puncture mark was found on her left arm.

"We did not find any suicide note in the house. We are yet to ascertain the reason behind her suicide. The viscera will be sent to the forensic science laboratory to know the substance she had injected," said inspector MK Ganapathi of Yeshwanthpur police said.

Nagarathnamma's siblings said their elder sister behaved normal and had a casual chat with them before going to bed.

R Basappa, who had been preparing for his daughter's wedding, rushed to the city along with a few relatives. They received Nagarathnamma's body after a post-mortem examination was conducted at MS Ramaiah, where she had worked for seven years.
