Bangalore:
The police on Friday presented a cash award of `10,000 to a 38-year-old man, who chased and caught a chainsnatcher near Sankey Tank.
The man, Mathikere resident Ravindra, was hurt while detaining the miscreant, Venkatesh, who had snatched the mangalsutra, worth `38,000, of a Malleswaram resident, Aliyamma, on November 5.
Ravindra had undergone a surgery for a dislocated backbone a couple of months ago. The back injury aggravated while forcing the chainsnatcher to surrender, he said.
Recalling the incident, Ravindra said he was returning home from work when he heard Aliyamma screaming for help on 18th Cross in Malleswaram.
Realising that her chain had been snatched, Ravindra chased the miscreant for a about a kilometre. The chainsnatcher entered a park near Sankey Tank, which made the task easier for Ravindra.
Meanwhile, several others also had joined the chase, and soon, Venkatesh was handed over to the police.
"I did not notice the pain while I was chasing the thief, but after a few hours, I noticed a swelling on my right leg," Ravindra, employed with a private transport company, said.
The brave heart said he has been unable to attend work ever owing to the pain on his legs and back.
"I am happy that the police department rewarded me with `10,000. Earlier, the inspector had informed me that `5,000 will be awarded to me. But the city police commissioner, who witnessed my struggle to walk, gave me `5,000 more," Ravindra said.
Meanwhile, Aliyamma profusely thanked Ravindra for catching the chainsnatcher. "I could have never bought a gold chain again in my life. My sincere thanks to Ravindra and the police," she said.
