Diamond ornaments worth Rs 1 crore robbed from jewellery shop

Bangalore: Diamond ornaments worth around Rs 1 crore were robbed from a well-known jewellery shop allegedly by one of its employees in Bangalore's Jayanagar district on Friday, police said.

A Rajastan native - Sonalal Khatri, an employee of 'Aabushan Jewelers', is the main suspect in the alleged robbery, police said.

Khatri had been employed at the jewellery shop around nine months ago at the reference of his cousin who already worked at the shop, they said.

Soon, Khatri earned the trust of the owner and was given access to the cabin where diamond ornaments are displayed, they said.

On Friday, on the pretext of taking stock of the diamond jewellery, Khatri entered the cabin during lunch hour and while pretending to arrange the jewels, put a few into his pocket and some into a small cloth pouch and hiding the pouch inside his shirt, went out of the shop and decamped with the diamond jewellery, police said.

When some customers later wanted to see the diamond jewellery, other employees found a number of ornaments missing. When they tried calling Khatri on his mobile phone, it was found to be switched off, following which a complaint was lodged, police said.
