How IIM Bangalore Is Helping Its Students Over Delayed Flipkart Jobs

IIM Bangalore says that despite this delay in job starts, it will not stop startups from coming to campus for recruitment.

  • Joining dates in Flipkart pushed back from June to December

  • IIM Bangalore reaching out to regular recruiters
Bengaluru: In this era of start-ups, what could be more exciting than being offered a job by a major player like Flipkart after a campus placement interview.

But bright young students from premier institutes like the IIMs and IITs who accepted these job offers were in for a shock. Flipkart told them that their joining dates had been pushed back from June to December this year.

Flipkart has tried to reassure the affected students. In a message to the IIMs they said, "Flipkart is committed and confident to onboard our campus hires in December. Please take this as an assurance."

A joining bonus of Rs 1.5 lakh will also be given to the new recruits when they join in December.

The institutes themselves are helping the students through this.

Sapna Agarwal, Head Career Development at IIM Bangalore, told NDTV that 20 students had been affected by delays in start-up jobs - 11 at Flipkart and nine at two other e-commerce players.

"Students were expecting to join in a couple of weeks and were told of delay at the last minute. Travel plans, accommodation plans had already been made.  Students are now anxious about whether the job offer would finally be honoured," she said.

IIM Bangalore is helping students to find other jobs if they prefer not to wait for Flipkart - by reaching out to regular recruiters to consider these students.

"Flipkart came in early in the recruitment cycle and picked up some very bright students," said Ms Agarwal.

Some students are also planning internships in the interim.

IIM Bangalore says that despite this delay in job starts, it will not stop startups from coming to campus for recruitment. That choice is up to students in a student- driven recruitment process. No company will be blacklisted.

Six months may not be a long time if you think of an overall career. But for students stepping into what might be their first job, being told their first day of work has been delayed is disconcerting. It is a volatile time for startups - and this seems to have delayed the starting up of at least some careers.
