Jilted lover jumps off 5-storey house as cops, crowd watch

Jilted lover jumps off 5-storey house as cops, crowd watch
Bangalore: In a nail-biting melodrama that draws a striking resemblance to Veeru's 'suicide scene' from Bollywood block-buster Sholay, a 24-year-old man perched himself atop the parapet of a five-storey building and threatened to take a fatal leap. His excuse was that his lady love had rejected his advances.

The man continued to battle with the turmoil within his mind while over 150 onlookers watched with bated breath.

Jaffar continued to walk on the parapet as police personnel and  the public continued to gather.
According to sources, Jaffar, a resident of nearby Austin Town, decided to end his life after his girlfriend dumped him.

Unable to bear the rejection, Jaffar got past the building security at 8 am by convincing them that he was going up to the terrace since he had secured the painting contract.

Once on top, bystanders below observed him walking on the parapet wall of the terrace with a confused look on his face and he appeared to be talking to himself.

Meanwhile, a large group of people, including office-goers residents of the area, police officials and even TV crews gathered below as the man continued to walk dangerously along the wall, giving onlookers a shock each time he lost his balance.

Fearing for his safety, concerned bystanders phoned the Cubbon Park police and the fire brigade, who rushed to the spot immediately.

A few fire safety officials and cops inched their way towards a visibly distressed Jaffar and attempted to talk him out of jumping, but sensing he was being cornered and noticing the police buildup below, Jaffar took a short run-up and flung himself off the rooftop.

The fire officials and police had prepared for the eventuality and managed to station a safety net below, but unbelievably it was not effective.

Shockingly real

Onlookers let out a collective shriek of horror as Jaffar plummeted face-first into the hard surface and lay still in a growing pool of blood.

He was rushed to Mallya Hospital in a Hoysala patrolling vehicle and hospital authorities revealed that he had broken his jaw and sustained multiple injuries to his legs and was currently in the ICU.

"It was like watching a reality show adventure stunt. It was shockingly gruesome and we didn't know what to do," said an eyewitness, who works at a nearby restaurant.

Witnesses said that Jaffar was continuously muttering in Hindi that he was going to end his life because his lover had ditched him.

Reason unclear

Following the shocking incident, the police conducted a background check and learned that Jaffar had gone near the girl's house in Fraser Town yesterday and created a commotion.

Based on her parent's complaint, he was taken into custody by the Fraser Town police and let off with a warning.

Jaffar's family claim poor academic performance is the reason behind his depression. The Cubbon Park police have registered a case of attempted suicide and are investigating.
