The accident occurred around 4.45 pm. After the children were all evacuated and taken for treatment to different hospitals, an irate mob set the bus on fire, around 6.30 pm. Even fire tenders which arrived at the spot were unable to start work, as the gathered mob obstructed them. By the time the tempers were dealt with, the bus had been completely gutted.
The principal of the school, Chandraiah, was not available for comments. His phone had been switched off, and zilla parishad member of Sarjapura, Anekal taluk, G Nagaraj, who had spoken with the principal, said that he was shocked by the accident, and had protested that this was the first time in the history of the school that such an incident had occurred. Nagaraj added that the principal had claimed that drivers appointed by the school had all undergone tests.
