Policeman Stabbed by Thieves Near Bengaluru

Bengaluru: A sub-inspector was stabbed to death on Friday allegedly by two motorcycle-borne thieves he was chasing them in Bengaluru Rural district, police said.

"Police sub-inspector S. Jagdish of Doddaballapur police station, who stopped the duo after a hot pursuit in the town, slipped and fell in a ditch on a road side while fighting with them and they stabbed him with a dagger and fled," state Director General of Police (DGP) Om Prakash told reporters here.

As the two accompanying constables went after the culprits, Jagdish bled to death while he was being taken to a hospital at Nelamangala, about 30 km north of this city.

"A case has been registered against the thieves - Raghu and Krishna, who have a history of burglaries and petty crimes and were out on bail," Mr Prakash said, adding a massive hunt has been launched to nab the duo, who are said to be father and son.

He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs.30 lakh to the bereaved family of Jagdish and additional Rs.20 lakh as group compensation as he died while on duty.

"We will also compensate Jagdish's family with the full salary he would have drawn till retirement and recommend him for a gallantry medal," Mr Prakash added.
