Bangalore:
Exclusive protection officers will be recruited to handle cases of domestic violence against women, the state government told the high court of Karnataka on Monday.
Five of these officers would be based in Bangalore, the state submitted in response to a public interest litigation, which pointed out the lack of woman protection officers in Karnataka, as envisaged by the Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The petitioner, city-based Veena Rai, also contended that the government's move to hand over the responsibility of probing domestic violence to child protection officers would be counter-productive.
The government informed the court of its decision to recruit 47 exclusive protection officers in taluks, where 35 or more domestic violence cases have been registered. It submitted a copy of the order on the recruitment of protection officers before the court.
