A Tanzanian woman has alleged that she was beaten and stripped by a mob in Bengaluru on Sunday.
Bengaluru:
A young Tanzanian woman was beaten up and stripped on a road in Bengaluru, prompting the Tanzanian embassy to ask the government to take action against her attackers.
Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj described the attack as "shameful" and said four men have been arrested.Police Commissioner NS Megharikh, however, told NDTV that no arrest has been made yet. Some people are being detained and questioned."
The 21-year-old victim is a college student. On Sunday night, the Wagon-R she was traveling in was stopped by a mob of at least 200 people. Half an hour earlier, another car had run over a woman walking on the road. The seething crowd then turned its anger on the newly-arrived Wagon-R.
The student was dragged out of the Wagon-R and then allegedly paraded naked. When she tried to board a bus to escape, the passengers pushed her out, said the All African Students Union in Bengaluru.
The car involved in the accident and the Wagon-R were both set on fire.
Confirming that the young woman's complaint mentioned the episode, Mr Megharikh said, "it is being looked into".
"When a concerned bystander tried to cover her with a T-shirt, he too was beaten," reported
The Deccan Chronicle.Police Commissioner N S Megharikh said that after the pedestrian was killed, the driver of the car was assaulted before he was moved to hospital.
The Tanzanian woman and her friends had reached the spot later, he said, adding, the mob mistook them for having been responsible for the mishap.
Asked if the incident was an instance of racial attack, he said, "There isn't a mindset problem as such... We interact regularly with African nationals".
