Bangalore:
A technical snag deposited Rs 1.20 lakh into the savings bank account of 28-year-old Narasimha Murthy, when he actually had only Rs 563.
Despite frequent alerts from the bank, the customer is believed to have ignored the bank's request to repay the amount and is now absconding.
"Murthy, a resident of Tavarkere and an employee of Paprika wears, used his ATM card to withdraw Rs 1.20 lakh from the CitiBank ATM booth in Koramangala, when he had a balance of just Rs 563," said Yogesh V Krishna, manager of State Bank of Mysore, Kormangala branch.
According to Krishna, on August 29, the bank's ATM machines had migrated from BASE 24 switch to the new OPUS switch, due to which customers could withdraw cash even when their account had insufficient balance.
While several customers had alerted the staff, and some even repaid the excess amount withdrawn, Murthy denied both and has been absconding. "He has failed to respond to our request to return the cash, and a criminal case has been registered," said Krishna. Koramangala police have registered a cheating case and are looking for the accused.
A similar case was registered on October 17 with the Cubbon Park police when a Karnataka Government Insurance Department (KGID) employee had withdrawn Rs 14.50 lakh from ATMs of other banks like INGVyasa and HSBC, with just Rs 260 in his account balance. The accused is absconding.
