Traffic Cops In Bengaluru Chase Stunt Drivers Online
Police arrested 21-year-old Mohammed Juber after he posted pictures of him doing stunts online.
Bengaluru: Boasting on social media about pulling a dangerous stunt while driving can now land you behind bars. Bengaluru police have decided to track social media for those who break traffic rules and then post photos online.

Mohammed Juber, 21, was arrested on Saturday after police found several photos of him performing stunts on his motorbike on his social media profile. He was booked under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act for breaking traffic rules.

The police said that they are pulling out all stops to curb dangerous driving.

"We noticed the photos that he (Juber) had put on his profile and then tracked him down. Those involved in such stunts keep changing their vehicles and it is usually difficult to track them down. We have to try new ways of keeping them in check," senior police officer Abhishek Goyal told NDTV.

Police are now looking for Mr Juber's associates who they believe are part of a larger stunt group in the city.

The decision to track traffic violators online is part of the police's latest attempt at cracking down on dangerous driving in India's IT capital. According to a state government report last year more than 180 people died while doing stunts on their two-wheelers or in related incidents.

Earlier this month the death of 18-year-old Shiny Kiran had shocked the city. The young girl was riding pillion when her friend tried a stunt on his motorbike. Ms Kiran lost her balance and died when a truck ran over her.

The social media savvy Bengaluru Police, who have more followers on Twitter then the New York Police Department, have warned that they will step up surveillance online to track down offenders.

"Whenever we get information we will act on it. We generally keep a close eye on social media and that has helped," Mr Goyal added.
